Reference level for patient dose in dental skull lateral teleradiography - British Journal of Radiology
Save This Article To My Filing Cabinet Email This Article The present work describes an experiment to obtain a local reference dose value in lateral skull teleradiography for dental applications. The reference value was based on patient measurements in seven dental X-ray units, using thermoluminescent chips, and measurements on a rubber globe filled with water at another 78 installations. Dosemeters were located initially in the head and neck of a human phantom to select the most suitable locations, and on the cephalostat of the X-ray unit at two appropriate locations, which did not interfere with the patient or with the usual imaging routine...

Prediction Models for Evaluation of Total-Body Bone Mass With Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry Among Children and Adolescents - Pediatrics
Save This Article To My Filing Cabinet Email This Article Conclusion: These models, including known determinants of bone mass and of bone measurements with DXA, provide an evaluation of pediatric bone mass that proceeds in steps from level 1 to level 3. The outcomes were different for patients at risk for compromised bone mass, compared with healthy children, with specific patterns for each medical disorder. We propose an algorithm for evaluation of bone measurements that follows levels 1 to 3...
Ultrasound guidance for a lateral approach to the sciatic nerve in the popliteal fossa - Anaesthesia
Save This Article To My Filing Cabinet Email This Article Descriptions of the use of ultrasound for nerve location have focused on upper limb blocks. We present a case in which ultrasound imaging was used for a lateral approach to the sciatic nerve in the popliteal fossa. Ultrasound images taken proximal to the popliteal crease showed tibial and common peroneal nerves as round hyperechoic structures superficial and lateral to the tibial artery...

Cancellous bone changes in the radius of patients with rheumatoid arthritis: a cross-sectional quantitative macroradiographic study - Rheumatology
Save This Article To My Filing Cabinet Email This Article Conclusion: FSA quantified radiographic bone loss in the distal radius of RA patients with increasing radiographic severity in terms of lower fractal signatures compared with the non-arthritics. Disease-related bone loss was demonstrated by FSA to involve mainly vertical trabeculae at the periarticular osteopenic, periarticular erosion and the mid-metaphyseal sites indicating directionality of bone resorption in RA...

Comparison of Different Quantitative Approaches to 18F-Fluoride PET Scans - The Journal of Nuclear Medicine
Save This Article To My Filing Cabinet Email This Article Conclusion: The results of this study show that 18F-fluoride metabolic values as well as changes in bone metabolism measured by SUV and Patlak analysis were strongly correlated with NLR findings. The high 95% range of normal change of SUV in limb bones, however, indicates that this parameter is of limited value in areas with low metabolic activity. The range of spontaneous bone metabolic rate fluctuations presented in this study may be used as an estimate for assessing changes in bone metabolic activity, and the normal values for limb bones provide a basis for further studies on 18F-fluoride bone metabolism...

'Dixon' technique improves 3T musculoskeletal MR - Diagnostic Imaging
Save This Article To My Filing Cabinet Email This Article Fat and water separation techniques in low- and midfield musculoskeletal MR scanning rely heavily on field homogeneity and cannot be used simultaneously. Scanning at 3T can overcome such constraints, according to Stanford University researchers. Dr. Scott B. Reeder and colleagues at Stanford and GE Medical Systems Applied Science Lab-West imaged the knees and ankles of five healthy volunteers. They combined steady-state free precession imaging at 3T with a method known as the Dixon technique, which allows for fat-water decomposition through the collection of multiple images at short echo time increments...

Monitoring of skeletal progression of prostate cancer by GFP imaging, X-ray, and serum OPG and PTHrP - The Prostate
Save This Article To My Filing Cabinet Email This Article Pamidronate treatment exhibited anti-tumor effects that were reflected by decreases in serum PTHrP, OPG, and by GFP and radiological imaging procedures. Imaging of GFP expression enables real-time monitoring of tumor growth in the bone. PTHrP and OPG may be useful as tumor biomarkers for PCa that has metastasized to bone. This novel human PCa model can be used to study the clinical potential of diagnostic and therapeutic modalities in the skeletal progression of PCas...

Valgus and varus deformity after wide-local excision, brachytherapy and external beam irradiation in two children with lower extremity synovial cell sarcoma: case report - BMC Cancer
Save This Article To My Filing Cabinet Email This Article Conclusions: Despite good functional outcomes, progressive deformity in both patients required epiphysiodesis more than 3 years after initial management. There is a dearth of information related to the effects of radiation therapy on the musculoskeletal system in children. Because limb-sparing approaches are to be highlighted in the next generation of cooperative group protocols for children with musculoskeletal tumors, documentation of the effects of surgery and radiation therapy will lead to improved decision making in the selection of the best treatment approach and in the follow-up of these patients...
